Prenda is hosting a country-wide coding challenge this summer for kids ages 8-18. Participating is easy.
Enter the The Great Prenda Code Challenge by signing up using the form below. 100% FREE! We’ll just need some basic info to register you, and you’ll be good to start.
If you don’t already have a Prenda account, create one here (it’s free through your library). In the software, we have 4 Missions (projects) for you to work on through the duration of the summer.
Submit your project(s) by July 31st. A team of judges will review and grade all submissions. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place in two age categories. (see prizes)

“I like coding because it lets your imagination run wild.”
Throughout the summer it’s up to you to build something awesome! We’ll give you all the tools, but at the end of the day, it’s going to take your effort, creativity, and skill. Don’t know how to code yet? You’re in the right place. Prenda’s Code Club software is stocked with tutorials to get you started. At some point in the summer, you’ll want to start working on a Mission, because that’s how you’ll win a prize.
Code on Your Own
Never coded before? No big deal. Find some time every day to log into Prenda and learn new coding concepts. Work through Workouts and Missions to level up. Work on whatever is interesting to you! Go at your own pace! Have fun with it.
Code with your library
Check with your library for opportunities to code with others. Some libraries may hold virtual code clubs throughout the summer, which is your opportunity to log in, code with friends, and have the support of your librarian.
Even if your library isn’t able to host virtual meetups, parents are welcome to organize informal code clubs with other families you know. Unsure how to do that? Access our training!
Code with the entire Prenda community
Prenda is excited to host a weekly virtual code club this summer. Log in, and code with dozens of other kids, see what others are creating, get inspired, ask for help, and have fun. Every Thursday from 9am-10am Pacific / 12pm-1pm Eastern. Zoom link sent out upon registration.
The Missions (Projects)
Prenda has dozens of Missions available, but here are a couple examples. Once logged in, find any one that looks interesting to you, and start working on it! We provide the minimum requirements, but it’s up to you to take it and build something awesome. The more awesome, the better! Log in, and see what’s available.
Hero Museum Day
It’s finally happened. You have saved the world so many times they have decided to create a display for you at the museum. They’re going to put your display in between the displays for the stinkiest fart ever recorded and the most ginormous blueberry ever harvested. You’ll need to create an interactive display that tells the story of your life, and some of your greatest accomplishments.
The Talking Book
After a long day of saving the world, it’s time to kick your feet up and relax. And what’s more relaxing than every hero’s favorite past time of reading a good book? Rather than reading a book the normal way, you much prefer reading the super-hero way. Find a book – perhaps one of your favorite books, perhaps one of your least favorite books – and make it come alive!
Remember when Superman.com came out and the entire internet could finally learn about the Man of Steel? Now is the time for the world to know about YOU! In this project, you will make your very own website to tell everyone about your super awesomeness. Get as creative as you want, but here are some basics your website needs to include…
Creating Your Story
This mission is happening in real time! We can’t tell you the background story because YOU are going to CREATE the background story by writing a series of heroic (and possibly funny) sentences. Your robot will randomly select the order of sentences which you will piece together to tell a hilariously random story.
Weekly Virtual Code Club
Learning to code by yourself can be… frustrating. Come to our weekly virtual code club to code alongside others from around the country. Come with questions or problems you can’t solve, and have access to help. These are done over Zoom, so you will need a Zoom account to participate.
Register using the button above. Email email@example.com for help.
Prenda Code Challenge 2020 Prizes
First, second and third place will be awarded for two age groups: 8-12 year olds and 13-18 year olds
If you haven’t played with a Makey Makey, you are in for a treat. Marketed as an “Invention Kit for the 21st Century,” it’s about the most mad scientist device we can think of. Wire up the real world and start coding it.
Sumbit Your Project(s)
Prizes will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in two ago categories. You will be graded on:
How creative was the coder with this project? Did they insert their own personality, interests, voice, imagery, or otherwise creativity into the Mission?
How difficult are the coding concepts displayed in this project? Higher difficulty will result in higher points in this category.
How awesome is this project? The point of the summer is to build something awesome, so we’ll be juding on the awesomeness factor.
Full Grading Rubric:
- Functionality (20%) – does it work like it’s supposed to?
- Technical prowess (20%) – did you write high quality code and solve problems efficiently?
- Appearance (20%) – the “look and feel” of the program
- Creativity (20%) – did you put a clever touch on the project?
- Degree of difficulty (20%) – how challenging is your project?
